Baker Grimes understands how much weight a name can carry. What he didn’t know was how his name would eventually define him in ways he would never imagine. Baker was born the only child of Maria Grimes. She is one of the Dominican Cartel’s most deadly female. The Dominican born Maria gave birth to her son in the mist of a drug raid that took place in Norfolk, Virginia at her Park Place apartment. She would later lose her freedom because of murder when Baker was 7 years old. With his mother in jail, Baker moved to his Grandmother’s home in the Colonial Place section of Norfolk, which is only a stone’s throw from the mean streets of Park Place. While in the stable and nurturing care of his Grandma Rosa, Baker seems to be on his way to a simplistic childhood until he is presented with a proposal from his cousin Sammy whom is more like his brother. The proposal Sammy presented came from the neighborhood kingpin who watched them turn their Atari game system into a money machine by inviting their friends to play for a fee.
“Big Sippi” is a Mississippi born moneymaker who runs the entire product line in Park Place. He sees Sammy and Baker as little visionaries and offers them a vision of his own. Baker and Sammy aren’t alone in his plan of placing them in his network but also their four friends; Hawk, Swampman, Clarkboy and Tony Smalls. Close like brothers the six of them often played “hide and go get” in front of a small convenient store named, “Red Ball.” Big Sippi sees an opportunity to capitalize off their hustle mentality and does. When Baker’s crew, known as “The Official Noize Makers,” agrees to work for Big Sippi their lives began to move faster than they would ever imagine.
Destiny deals them their first blow and catapults them into the murder game, when they come home from school and walk directly into man-hood. Each summer they become wiser in the ways of the streets and also climb the ladder in rank.
A trip to New York to visit family gives Sammy and Baker another opportunity to become even bigger in the drug game when they meet their Cousin Celia’s boyfriend “Cutta.” But, before they leave New York something happens and fuels Baker’s lust for murder.
Baker becomes more deranged. After spiraling events spin him out of control into a methodical tantrum of vengeance, Baker finds out love and loyalty can be disrupted with a price and the streets…DON’T PLAY GAMES!

"Hamza Atoi has the promise of being one of the best authors of this generation. His writing style possesses the same engaging, raw, thought-provoking honesty that is reminiscent of the legendary literary great Richard Wright and the critically acclaimed Nathan McCall. Whether it's in a novel or in his poetic prose, Atoi’s artistry will grab and mesmerize you from the first word to the last."
-- Angel Baker from OnTheVerge.com and author of the book "The Last Writes".
"Hamza Atoi's book: "Baker Grimes" will be highly embraced within the literary canon of street literature. The level of storytelling in his novel is way beyond most books in its genre. He was able to make each character have his/her own personality without bleeding into other characters which is a skill not easy to acquire. I was riveted from the start, as I was taken from reader to bystander to participant. This book will indeed embrace the mantle of the likes of Donald Goines and others of his caliber. Salute!"
-Bruce George, Co-Founder of Russell Simmons, Def Poetry Jam on HBO
"Hamza blessed us with his presence on the 'Writers Block' in early 2000's! His style of writing and delivery instantly made him a crowd favorite! Hamza's graphic imagery brings the story to life. Filled with passion, true grit, and a force to reckoned with is what a writer is made of. Hamza encompasses those qualities in Baker Grimes!"
